New Organist and Choirmaster
The Vicar and Churchwardens are pleased to announce that John Cooper Green has been appointed Organist and Choirmaster.
John was born in Keswick but received much of his music training from Andrew Seivewright at Carlisle Cathedral. After studying at the Royal College of Music and Durham University, where amongst his teachers were Herbert Howells, Herbert Sumsion , Ralph Downes and Nicholas Kynaston, he became assistant organist at Chester Cathedral.
He then became organist and choirmaster at the Collegiate Church of St.Mary Stafford. The rest of his career has been spent in boarding schools, firstly at Rossall in Lancashire, then Framlingham College in Suffolk, where he was conductor of the Aldeburgh Chamber Choir, and for the final seventeen years he was Director of Music at Stowe School.
Since retiring home to Keswick in 2007 he has become conductor of the Ambleside and District Choral Society. Last year he directed the Grasmere Chorale in a CD of Andrew Seivewright’s music “When winter comes” which has had good reviews.
